FC Schalke 04 will begin their UEFA Champions League campaign without Felipe Santana after the defender suffered a thigh injury during Saturday's 1-1 draw against FC Bayern München.

The Brazilian centre-back has been ruled out for several weeks, meaning he is certain to miss Schalke's opening fixture at Chelsea FC on 17 September. The Königsblauen also lost Jan Kirchhoff (knee), Kaan Ayhan (calf) and goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann (ear) to injury during the Bayern game, though all three are expected back in the coming days.

Schalke will travel to Stamford Bridge with a substantial list of absentees, with Fabian Giefer, Sead Kolasinac, Leon Goretzka and Jefferson Farfán also sidelined. Jens Keller's charges face Sporting Clube de Portugal and NK Maribor along with the Blues in UEFA Champions League Group G.
