Frank de Boer's Champions League journey

UEFA.com looks back on AFC Ajax coach Frank de Boer's 20-year UEFA Champions League journey, taking in highlights of his debut, his first goal and his 1995 triumph.

de Boer: My Champions League journey

UEFA Champions League debut
Ajax 2-0 AC Milan, 14/09/94
"As a young player, it makes you feel that this is what it's all about, to play these type of matches. That's the most beautiful thing. So there were some healthy nerves, but not like your legs had turned to jelly. More like I was thinking: I want to experience this as a player."

First UEFA Champions League goal
Ajax 3-0 HNK Hajduk Split, 15/03/95
"It was a corner, and we had practised them a lot. We always made a block with the players, and then I always had more space than the others. It was a fantastic moment, not just because it was the first time I'd scored in the Champions League, but also because it was important."

First UEFA Champions League final
Ajax 1-0 AC Milan, 24/05/95
"Like I said before about playing in the Champions League, I felt like that was what the effort was for. To win the title as a player gave me such an intense happy feeling ... one you wanted as a boy. To lift up the trophy with the big ears was an indescribable feeling."

Last UEFA Champions League final
Ajax 1-1 Juventus (Juve won 4-2 on penalties), 22/05/96
"We had a lot of injuries and had a completely different team to the year before. I injured my ankle two weeks before, and I had just been patched up. Eventually, because we had so much experience, we made it to penalties, but in the end they wanted to win even more than we did."

UEFA Champions League coaching debut
AC Milan 0-2 Ajax, 08/12/10
"I almost couldn't be nervous, because I couldn't really put my stamp on the team, because my first training session was actually at San Siro the day before the match. I only said to them how I see things. We spoke about it, about individual players, but it's as a team that you make the difference."
