"Why always me?" asked Thiago Alcántara after FC Bayern München confirmed the midfielder – absent since April – will be out "long term" having torn knee ligaments again.

Thiago Alcántara has suffered another injury setback that will keep him out "in the long term" according to FC Bayern München after tearing knee ligaments.

The Spain midfielder has not played since March because of a similar injury and only returned to team training six days ago before breaking down. "What can I say? I am obviously deeply disappointed and desperate," said the 23-year-old former FC Barcelona player. "Why always me? But I will not give up. I will fight again. I will get back again. And I will celebrate my comeback at Bayern."

Sporting director Matthias Sammer added: "We are all shocked and saddened. After such a long time out, Thiago was so close to a comeback. But he knows that FC Bayern is there for him. We will do everything to help him return to fitness and win many trophies with us."
