Jack Wilshere looks set to miss at least the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 after the Arsenal FC midfielder underwent ankle surgery.

The England midfielder sustained ligament damage to his left ankle in Saturday's home Premier League loss to Manchester United and had a successful operation today. The club estimate that Wilshere will be out for three months, adding to an injury list that already includes Wojciech Szczęsny (hip), David Ospina (thigh), Mesut Özil (knee), Mathieu Debuchy (ankle), Theo Walcott (groin), Abou Diaby (calf) and Danny Welbeck (hamstring).

In the 22-year-old's absence, Arsenal clinched a knockout berth on Wednesday with a 2-0 Group D home win against Borussia Dortmund, though both captain Mikel Arteta and goalscorer Yaya Sanogo were forced off with fresh injuries. The round of 16 runs from 17 February to 18 March, nine days before England's next UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier at home to Lithuania.
