Centre-back Sergio Ramos will miss Real Madrid CF's UEFA Champions League round of 16 encounter with FC Schalke 04 after tearing a hamstring in his left leg.
The 28-year-old is expected to be out of action for around five weeks after picking up the injury during the Liga leaders' 2-1 win against Sevilla FC on Wednesday, when Madrid's Colombia forward James Rodríguez broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot – forcing him out for two months. Ramos will sit out both legs of the Schalke tie – on 18 February and 10 March – but is expected to return in time for the 22 March Liga visit to FC Barcelona.
Ramos's injury leaves Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti without both first-choice central defenders for Saturday's derby at third-placed Club Atlético de Madrid, with Pepe still recovering from a rib complaint. "It's a significant injury," said the Italian of Ramos's problem. "He will be out for five weeks but I have faith in the partnership of Raphaël Varane and Nacho. They are enthusiastic, are really looking forward to playing, and I'm sure they will do a good job."
