Madrid feel the heat, Paris kept at bay

The pressure has intensified on Real Madrid CF in Spain after a weekend that also ended with Paris Saint-Germain missing a chance to go top and Chelsea FC stretching their lead.

The situation is supremely tight at the Liga summit after Club Atlético de Madrid swept aside top dogs Real Madrid CF 4-0, a result which allowed FC Barcelona to close within a point on Sunday. As for Paris Saint-Germain, they spurned a chance to take control in France, while Chelsea FC extended their lead and FC Bayern München triumphed.

Paris Saint-Germain could not make the most of their opportunity to leapfrog Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyonnais at the Stade de Gerland, needing a Zlatan Ibrahimović penalty to draw 1-1.
Chelsea FC moved seven points clear of their nearest Premier League rivals as Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanović both scored to defeat Aston Villa FC 2-1.
