Messi and Bayern make hay, Paris count costs

Lionel Messi and FC Bayern München were in voracious mood this weekend, but things went less well for injury-hit Paris Saint-Germain and four-goal Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

There was plenty to catch the eye across Europe this weekend as the 16 remaining UEFA Champions League hopefuls attended to domestic duties. Lionel Messi took the opportunity to plunder his 23rd Liga hat-trick for FC Barcelona, and Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern München were clearly in similarly hungry mood, racking up eight unanswered goals. Things went less well for Paris Saint-Germain as they lost a quartet of injured players and dropped points against SM Caen, while Juventus were also held and Bayer 04 Leverkusen lost despite scoring four times.

• Reduced to nine players after Yohan Cabaye, Serge Aurier, Lucas and Marquinhos all went off injured, Paris Saint-Germain conceded twice late on to draw 2-2 with SM Caen. 
Chelsea FC enjoyed a weekend off, having been been knocked out of the FA Cup in the previous round by Bradford City AFC.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk were not in action over the weekend after returning from their Spanish training camp on Tuesday.
FC Bayern München warmed up for European action in style with an 8-0 hammering of Hamburger SV, Mario Götze, Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben all scoring twice.

FC Schalke 04 are down to fourth in the Bundesliga following a 1-0 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt, their first defeat in six championship outings.
• Isco and Karim Benzema found the target for Liga leaders Real Madrid CF in a 2-0 success against RC Deportivo La Coruña.

• Eight points clear in Switzerland, FC Basel 1893's six-game league winning run came to an end with a 1-1 home draw against FC Sion.   
• Yacine Brahimi got the only goal of the game as FC Porto came out on top against Vitória SC on Friday evening.

• Out of the FA Cup, Manchester City FC had no fixture over the weekend and were last in action in a 4-1 midweek success at Stoke City FC. 
FC Barcelona kept themselves within a point of Real Madrid courtesy of a 5-0 home triumph against Levante UD, Lionel Messi posting yet another hat-trick in his 300th Liga outing.

Juventus missed the chance to build a nine-point gap in Serie A as they were held to a 2-2 draw at struggling AC Cesena, Arturo Vidal firing a late penalty wide.
Borussia Dortmund pulled themselves out of the relegation zone in Germany thanks to a 4-2 home win at the expense of 1. FSV Mainz 05.

• Son Heung-Min hit a hat-trick, but Bayer 04 Leverkusen lost a rollercoaster game 5-4 against VfL Wolfsburg following Bas Dost's added-time effort. 
Club Atlético de Madrid fell back down to earth after beating Real Madrid last weekend as the third-placed Liga side succumbed 2-0 at RC Celta de Vigo.

• FA Cup holders Arsenal FC eased their way through to the quarter-finals of this year's competition following a 2-0 victory against Middlesbrough FC, Olivier Giroud grabbing both goals.
 Heavy rain washed out AS Monaco FC's Saturday meeting with Montpellier Hérault SC before a ball was kicked.
