Chelsea FC lifted the English League Cup for the first time since 2007 as a goal in each half secured victory against Tottenham Hotspur FC at Wembley.

Spurs last won the competition seven years ago and, like their rivals, were hoping to get their hands on the trophy for a fifth time. However, John Terry's deflected effort gave Chelsea a 45th-minute lead before Kyle Walker turned a shot from Diego Costa past his own goalkeeper 11 minutes into the second half, handing José Mourinho his first trophy since returning to the club.

Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen provided the first moment of note on ten minutes when he curled a free-kick against the crossbar, but neither side went particularly close to scoring thereafter until Terry's opening strike. Spurs failed to clear a Willian corner and the Chelsea captain hit a low effort from the edge of the box that looked to be heading straight at goalkeeper Hugo Lloris until it was diverted by Eric Dier into the back of the net.

If a half-time deficit appeared a touch harsh on Tottenham, the scoreline looked less unjust when Eden Hazard flashed a drive just wide of goal, and Cesc Fàbregas also went close with a spectacular overhead kick.

Then, just as torrential rain began to fall on 56 minutes, Costa received the ball on the left inside the area and unleashed an effort that took a wicked deflection off Walker and wrong-footed Lloris. That took the wind out of Tottenham's sails, and they rarely threatened a comeback as Mourinho took his managerial haul to 17 major trophies.
