UEFA.com delves into the history books to find out who of FC Barcelona, Manchester City FC, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus is most likely to claim the final two places in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals – and finds the numbers firmly favour FC Barcelona while Borussia Dortmund have a decent chance of turning round their tie with Juventus.

FC Barcelona v Manchester City FC (first leg 2-1)
• Manchester City FC have never previously lost a home first leg 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League.

• Barcelona have won 2-1 away twice before in the first leg, and won both ties. They beat Chelsea FC in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (1-1 second leg) and AC Sparta Praha in the 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round (0-1 second leg, Barcelona win on away goals).

• Three sides have won the first leg 2-1 away from home in the UEFA Champions League round of 16; all progressed to the quarter-finals (100%).

• Furthermore, three sides have also won 2-1 away in the first leg in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds; again, all won the tie (100%).

• In the UEFA Champions League overall, qualifying included, 35 teams have been victorious in a tie having won the away first leg 2-1 (89.7%). A team has recovered from a 2-1 home defeat to win the tie only four times (10.3%).

Borussia Dortmund v Juventus (first leg 1-2)
• Juventus have won one previous home first leg in the UEFA Champions League, against Olympiacos FC in the 1998/99 quarter-finals. They drew the second leg 1-1 to progress.

• Dortmund, meanwhile, lost 2-1 to SL Benfica in the 1963/64 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round, winning the return 5-0. They beat Club Brugge KV 2-1 in the home second leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round round tie, but lost the ensuing penalty shoot-out 4-2.

• In the UEFA Champions League round of 16, a first leg has finished 2-1 to the home team on eight previous occasions. The first-leg victors won three of those ties (37.5%) with the beaten away team in the first game turning round the tie in the return to prevail in the other five (62.5%).

• In all UEFA Champions League knockout ties, a team victorious 2-1 in the home first leg has won the tie on six occasions (42.9%). A team has recovered from a 2-1 away defeat to win the tie eight times (57.1).

• In the UEFA Champions League overall, qualifying included, there have been 68 occasions where a home side has won the first leg 2-1. The victorious side from the first game has won 39 of those ties (57.4%); the side beaten 2-1 away first has won the other 29 ties (42.6%).
