Barcelona edge Clásico, Bayern suffer loss

FC Barcelona hauled themselves four points clear in Spain by downing Clásico rivals Real Madrid CF, on a weekend when FC Bayern München slipped to a rare defeat.

The Clásico dominated the the headlines on Sunday evening as arch-rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF locked horns in Catalonia, where a 2-1 win for the hosts strengthened their hold on top spot. Elsewhere, FC Bayern München slipped to a surprise loss, Paris Saint-Germain took over in France and Juventus posted another victory.

Paris Saint-Germain are the new leaders in France after leapfrogging Olympique Lyonnais. Laurent Blanc's men kicked off the weekend's action with a 3-1 defeat of FC Lorient thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimović's hat trick – the Sweden captain burying a pair of penalties – and they now stand one point clear after Lyon then lost to OGC Nice.
FC Barcelona took the spoils in the Clásico and lifted themselves four points clear in the race for Liga honours in the process. Jérémy Mathieu headed the home side ahead and although Cristiano Ronaldo levelled for Real Madrid CF, Luis Suárez buried a second-half winner to leave the Blaugrana in charge with ten matches remaining.
Paris v Barcelona: 15 & 21 April

Club Atlético de Madrid halted a run of three consecutive Liga draws by inflicting a 2-0 defeat on Getafe CF. Fernando Torres headed the fourth-placed champions in front with his first Liga goal since rejoining Atlético and Tiago doubled the lead a minute before the break, nodding in at the far post.
• After leading the Spanish title charge for much of the season, Real Madrid CF need to arrest their slide if they hope to remain in contention. Beaten 2-1 by arch-rivals Barcelona at the Camp Nou, Carlo Ancelotti's men have mustered just one victory in their last four league encounters.
Atlético v Madrid: 14 & 22 April

• Second in Portugal, FC Porto cut SL Benfica's Liga lead to three points after the Eagles lost 2-1 at Rio Ave FC. The Dragons stumbled too – drawing 1-1 at CD Nacional – but the point gained could prove significant in the title race, with only eight games remaining. Cristian Tello struck the opener for Porto, before Wagner restored parity.
FC Bayern München slipped to only their second Bundesliga defeat of the season and their first at home as they were surprisingly beaten 2-0 by VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. Raffael struck in either half for the visitors, and there was more bad news for Josep Guardiola's side as Arjen Robben tore an abdominal muscle set to keep him sidelined "for several weeks" according to sporting director Matthias Sammer.

• AS Monaco FC remain fourth in Ligue 1 after ending a memorable week with a 3-1 success at Stade de Reims. Fabinho, Anthony Martial and Nabil Dirar found the net for the principality outfit, who lie four points behind Olympique de Marseille in France's third and final UEFA Champions League berth.
Juventus continued their march towards a fourth consecutive Serie A crown by engineering a 1-0 triumph at home to Genoa CFC. Carlos Tévez fired a shot in off the crossbar to make the difference, taking his tally of championship efforts this term to 16 – and he later missed a penalty as the Bianconeri kept themselves 14 points out in front.
