Fresh from clinching a berth in this season's UEFA Champions League final, FC Barcelona had further reason to celebrate on Sunday when they sewed up the Liga title with a game to spare. Final rivals Juventus had a victory to savour as well, the Serie A champions battling back to see off FC Internazionale Milano thanks to midweek hero Álvaro Morata.

Club Atlético de Madrid 0-1 FC Barcelona
Luis Enrique steered his side to their 23rd Liga title in his first season in charge thanks to a winning effort from Lionel Messi at the Estadio Vicente Calderón. Barcelona lost the championship to Atlético when they could only draw with the Colchoneros on the final day last season, but this time they ended any lingering suspense against the capital outfit with a game to spare.

Messi made the difference as he has so many times for the Catalan giants, exchanging a crisp one-two with Pedro Rodríguez before finishing from close range on 65 minutes. At the other end, Claudio Bravo did well with a string of saves to deny the hosts, who lie 16 points back from their successors in third place.

"This is the first," commented midfielder Sergio Busquets, whose side will meet Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final on 30 May as they chase a memorable treble. "It's time to celebrate because this is the most difficult competition – you face all the teams. Now we have one trophy, we're missing two and there's two games to go. It's a historic season."

Álvaro Morata was the star once again for Juventus as the Serie A champions recovered from an early blow to edge the Derby d'Italia. Mauro Icardi put hosts Inter ahead after nine minutes, but Juve drew level close to half-time when Claudio Marchisio converted from the penalty spot, Nemanja Vidić having brought down Alessandro Matri.

The visitors opted to rest the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Carlos Tévez and Arturo Vidal ahead of Wednesday's Coppa Italia final against SS Lazio, but they got the result they wanted when Morata made up for a couple of spurned chances seven minutes from time. Having clinched Juve's place in the UEFA Champions League showpiece with the equaliser at Real Madrid CF, the 22-year-old won the game with a bobbled effort that Samir Handanovič could not keep out.

"A coach needs to consider himself fortunate to be working with a squad like this," said victorious coach Massimiliano Allegri afterwards. "We were a little sluggish at the start but did very well after the break and took our chances. This team always plays with intensity and the will to win. You need to keep the tension high and it was important to come away with the victory today."
