There was frustration for Manchester United but resounding wins for BATE and APOEL – UEFA.com looks at how the play-off teams got on ahead of next week's second legs.

TUESDAY MATCHES
Monaco (1-3) Valencia:

Toulouse 1-1 Monaco
Monaco drew for the second successive Ligue 1 game ahead of next weekend's match against Paris Saint-Germain. Thomas Lemar registered midway through the second half to cancel out Tongo Doumbia's strike after 20 minutes.

Rayo Vallecano 0-0 Valencia
Valencia opened their Spanish Liga campaign with a goalless draw in the capital.

Malmö(2-3) Celtic:

Häcken 1-0 Malmö
Malmö's six-game undefeated run in the Swedish First Division came to an end as defeat at Häcken left them four points behind leaders Göteborg, who play on Sunday. Martin Ericsson scored the home winner 12 minutes from time.

Dundee United 1-3 Celtic
Ronny Deila's side remain unbeaten in the league after making it four wins from five outings, Leigh Griffiths opening the scoring to take his tally to 16 in 20 appearances.

Shakhtar Donetsk (1-0) Rapid Wien:

Arsenal Kyiv 0-3 Shakhtar Donetsk
Shakhtar cruised into the round of 16 of the Ukrainian Cup with a straightforward success against their third-tier opponents. Maksim Malyshev's headed opener 22 minutes in was added to by Eduardo before Serhiy Gryn scored his first goal in a Shakhtar shirt.

Rapid Wien 3-0 Grödig
Rapid returned to winning ways after dropping their first points of the league season with a draw at Sturm Graz last Sunday. Zoran Barisic's side made it five wins from six Bundesliga outings thanks to second-half goals from Mario Sonnleitner, Deni Alar and Philipp Schobesberger.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv (2-2) FC Basel:

Maccabi Tel-Aviv 3-2 Bnei Sakhnin
After scoring twice in the week at Basel, Eran Zahavi was Maccabi's hero once again as he notched another two to help the Israeli champions begin their defence with a narrow win at Bloomfield Stadium.

Lugano 1-3 Basel
Basel scored three times for the fifth successive league game to make it 18 points from a possible 18. The hosts' early lead lasted just two minutes before Davide Callà's penalty, and the midfielder doubled his own tally after Mohamed Elneny had put the visitors ahead.

Dinamo Zagreb (2-1) Skënderbeu:

Istra 1961 1-1 Dinamo Zagreb
Zoran Mamić's charges drew for the fourth time in seven Croatian First League games this term, Ante Ćorić on the mark 11 minutes before the break. Damir Zlomislić had put Istra in front.

WEDNESDAY MATCHES
Club Brugge (1-3) Manchester United:

Zulte Waregem 2-0 Club Brugge
Brugge's underwhelming start to the league campaign continued as they lost on their travels for the second time in three away games, a 2-0 defeat leaving them with seven points from five outings.

Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
The Red Devils made it three clean sheets from their opening three games for the first time since 2005/06, but they could not find a way past Newcastle at Old Trafford. Chris Smalling headed against a post late on.

Bayer Leverkusen (0-1) Lazio:

Hannover 0-1 Leverkusen
Hakan Çalhanoğlu scored a trademark free-kick to sink Hannover and keep Roger Schmidt's side in perfect shape in the Bundesliga. As of Saturday night, Leverkusen are the only side level with Bayern München at the top of the table.

Lazio 2-1 Bologna
Lucas Biglia and Ricardo Kishna – on his debut following a summer move from Ajax – hit the net inside the opening 23 minutes to set Lazio on their way to victory in their maiden assignment of the season.

CSKA Moskva (1-2) Sporting CP:

CSKA Moskva 2-1 Rostov
Rostov were the latest victims as CSKA maintained their perfect Russian Premier League start despite falling behind ten minutes in. Ahmed Musa equalised on 66 minutes before a late own goal kept the Army Men's bandwagon rolling.

Sporting CP 1-1 Paços de Ferreira
Sporting failed to win a home league game for the first time since February, Pelé earning the visitors a point with a penalty – João Pereira dismissed in conceding the spot kick – ten minutes from time. André Carrillo struck for the hosts on 41 minutes.

Partizan (0-1) BATE Borisov:

Borac Čačak 1-3 Partizan
Goals from Nikola Trujić, Gregor Balažic and Saša Lukić were enough to earn the Serbian champions maximum points – their fourth win in six league matches this term.

BATE 7-1 Neman
BATE bounced back from recent disappointing league results with a dominant victory. After a defeat and 0-0 draw in their last two outings, Vitali Rodionov's late pair put the icing on the cake as they brushed aside Neman in style.

APOEL (0-1) Astana:

Ermis 1-5 APOEL
The Cypriot champions kicked off in ominous fashion with a thumping win at Ermis in their season opener. Luís Leal scored two while Tomás De Vincenti, Semir Štilić and Constantinos Charalambides all chipped in to send out an early warning to title rivals.
