Barcelona rampant, Paris in record-breaking form

Barcelona put seven without reply past ten-man Valencia in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday, when Paris Saint-Germain made it a Ligue 1 record 33 unbeaten.

WEDNESDAY
Barcelona 7–0 Valencia
(Suarez 7 12 83 88, Messi 29 59 74)
Luís Suarez and Lionel Messi all but confirmed Barcelona's place in the Copa del Rey final after this, their biggest win of the season. Suarez continued his hot form at the Camp Nou, where all nine of his goals in 2016 have now been scored, with four more for the holders. Neymar hit the upright with a penalty – awarded for a foul by Shkodran Mustafi, who was dismissed – on the stroke of half-time, but it got worse for Gary Neville's side after the break. Suarez and Messi each added two more, making the return game next Wednesday largely academic.

Club Brugge 1-0 Gent(Diaby 21)
On target in the first leg a fortnight ago, Abdoulay Diaby found the net again as second-placed Club Brugge defeated league leaders Gent on away goals in the Belgian Cup semi-finals. They play Standard Liège, 3-1 aggregate winners against Genk, in the decider.

Juventus 1-0 Genoa (De Maio og 30)
Juan Cuadrado's deflected effort earned Juventus their 13th consecutive Serie A success, the Colombia winger's shot hitting Sebastian De Maio and looping over visiting keeper Mattia Perin. Simone Zaza's late red card mattered little for the Bianconeri, who remain two points adrift of pacesetters Napoli.

Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 Lorient (Cavani 6, Ibrahimović 55, Kurzawa 69; Raphael Guerreiro 19)
Laurent Blanc's 100th Ligue 1 fixture as Paris coach resulted in another win for the capital side, who extended their unbeaten run to a French top-flight record 33 matches. Layvin Kurzawa crossed for Zlatan Ibrahimović's 20th league goal of the campaign before rubber-stamping the champions' 14th straight victory in all competitions himself.

Watford 0–0 Chelsea
Chelsea made it ten without defeat under Guus Hiddink. Branislav Ivanović and Diego Costa went closest inside the last 12 minutes only to be thwarted by the inspired Heurelho Gomes. The Blues rise one place to 13th in the Premier League.

TUESDAY
Sunderland 0-1 Manchester City
(Agüero 16)
City, who announced on Monday that Josep Guardiola will take over from Manuel Pellegrini this summer, remain second, three points behind Leicester City, 2-0 winners against Liverpool. Sergio Agüero made the difference once more, controlling Jesús Navas's deflected cross before poking past Vito Mannone to take his tally to five goals in his last three league games.

Arsenal 0-0 Southampton
The Gunners have picked up just three points from their last four Premier League outings and have dropped to fourth, below north London rivals Tottenham. Arsène Wenger's side trail Leicester by five points after a frustrating evening against the Saints, visiting keeper Fraser Forster denying the hosts on a number of occasions. Mesut Özil spurned perhaps the best opportunity midway through the first half.

Sassuolo 0-2 Roma (Salah 11, El Shaaraway 90+4)
Roma stay fifth – nine points behind table-topping Napoli – after their second win in six league games. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring with a delightful curling effort from the edge of the penalty area, his first league goal since October. Deep into added time, seven minutes after Radja Nainggolan had been sent off and Domenico Berardi fired over the resulting penalty, Stephan El Shaarawy prodded in from close range to make it two in two since his arrival on loan from Milan.
