  • Goalkeeper: Jeroen Zoet (PSV)

PSV's standout performer frustrated Atlético several times and often took pressure off his defence with important catches from set pieces, also producing a fine one-on-one stop from Antoine Griezmann.

  • Defender: Diego Godín (Atlético)

Playing his part in restricting the PSV attack to rare forays, the Uruguayan international had the home side largely in check with a characteristically composed, assured display.

  • Defender: Javier Mascherano (Barcelona)

Kept the Arsenal forward line quiet, compensating for what he lacks in speed with razor-sharp anticipation to snuff out the threat.

  • Defender: Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)

Nobody ever has an easy night up against Neymar, Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi, but the France defender showed courage with and without the ball.

  • Defender: Jeffrey Bruma (PSV)

Made a stunning clearance off the line in the fourth minute to deny Luciano Vietto an opening goal and was a rock at the back for the home team throughout.

  • Midfielder: David Silva (Manchester City)

The City playmaker looked menacing all evening in Kyiv and had a hand in all three goals, converting one himself to cap off a fine team move.

  • Midfielder: Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona)

Pulled the strings for his side and covered plenty of ground too, as Arsenal – who so often dominate the ball – were limited to 35% possession.

  • Midfielder: Arjen Robben (Bayern)

The Dutchman was at his lively best in Turin, giving Patrice Evra a testing night as he fired in four shots – including a trademark dribble and curling shot for Bayern's second goal.

  • Forward: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

Ended his six-game run of failing to score past Petr Čech with a cool finish, before calmly slotting from the penalty spot to leave his club in command of the tie.

  • Forward: Sergio Agüero (Manchester City)

The forward registered the all-important opening goal with a fine strike and his pace and movement caused the Dynamo Kyiv defence problems throughout.

  • Forward: Paulo Dybala (Juventus)

The Argentinian has had a productive first Juve season in Serie A but drew a blank in his first six UEFA Champions League outings; he put that right with a confident finish to revive the Bianconeri challenge.
