Champions League play-off teams' form guide

UEFA.com looks at the European records of the 20 play-off contenders, with Celtic and FC København making record sixth appearances and three sides getting this far for the first time.

Steaua București (ROU) v Manchester City (ENG) - 16 & 24 August

• Both their previous play-offs have ended level on aggregate, Steaua beating Legia Warszawa on away goals in 2013/14 but losing to Ludogorets Razgrad on penalties the following season.

• All of City's group appearances over the last five seasons, including their 2015/16 semi-final run, have come with automatic entry.

Ajax (NED) v Rostov (RUS) - 16 & 24 August

• Knocked out Dynamo Kyiv in 2010/11 for the first of five straight group appearances; they did not need to qualify for the next four.

Young Boys (SUI) v Borussia Mönchengladbach (GER) - 16 & 24 August

• In only previous play-off in 2010/11 lost to Tottenham Hotspur, having led 3-0 in the home first leg – yet to reach group stage.

• Fell to Dynamo Kyiv in 2012/13 but in 2014/15 beat FK Sarajevo 10-3 on aggregate in UEFA Europa League play-offs.

FC København (DEN) v APOEL (CYP) - 16 & 24 August

• Making a joint-record sixth play-off appearance; four eliminations is a record, with their sole success against Rosenborg in 2010/11.
APOEL  
Play-off record: W3 L1
• Last season's loss to Astana ended their perfect run in play-offs; in 2011/12 APOEL overcame Wisła Kraków on their way to the quarter-finals.

Dinamo Zagreb (CRO) v Salzburg (AUT) - 16 & 24 August

• Have scored a record 16 goals in play-offs and in their sole defeat came within an ace of recovering from losing the first leg 2-0 at home to Austria Wien in 2013/14.

• Lost to Israeli sides in 2009/10 and 2010/11 and then Malmö in 2014/15; the Swedish side also beat Salzburg in last season's third qualifying round.

Porto (POR) v Roma (ITA) - 17 & 23 August

• Beat Lille 3-0 on aggregate in 2014/15 on way to quarter-finals, the furthest they have got since winning in 2003/04.

• Have not had to qualify for any of their nine previous UEFA Champions League group appearances.

Villarreal (ESP) v Monaco (FRA) - 17 & 23 August

• Have never failed to reach group stage in any of their previous eight major European campaigns.

• Fell 4-3 on aggregate to Valencia last season having reached quarter-finals on European return the campaign before.

• Beat Steaua Bucureșt on penalties in 2014/15 in a memorable tie where they equalised in the last minute. Then, after Vladislav Stoyanov's red card, defender Cosmin Moţi took over in goal and saved twice in the shoot-out.

• Hoping to repeat their successes against FC København in 2011/12 and Maribor two seasons later. Have also won both their UEFA Europa League play-offs.

Celtic (SCO) v Hapoel Beer-Sheva (ISR) - 17 & 23 August

• In a joint-record sixth play-off having lost to Malmö and Maribor in last two seasons following victories against Shakhter Karagandy and Helsingborg.

• Have knocked out Sheriff and Olympiacos on their competition debut; their only previous two-legged European wins have come in qualifying for the 1995/96 UEFA Cup and 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

Dundalk (IRL) v Legia Warszawa (POL) - 17 & 23 August

• The first Irish team to reach the play-offs and assured of at least matching Shamrock Rovers, who played in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage.
