There were big wins for some of the UEFA Champions League group stage teams as the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all made light work of domestic opposition.

Liga champions Barça began their new season in blistering form, with Luis Suárez hitting a hat-trick and Lionel Messi registering twice in a 6-2 defeat of Betis. UEFA Europa League holders Sevilla also racked up half a dozen goals, downing Espanyol 6-4, before Gareth Bale scored two in Madrid's 3-0 victory at Real Sociedad.

Robert Lewandowski hit the ground running as well with a hat-trick for Bayern in their 5-0 German Cup success at Jena, and Alexandre Lacazette fired a double as Lyon saw off Caen 2-0. That kept up OL's perfect Ligue 1 record – a feat matched by Paris as they brushed aside Metz 3-0, while Premier League champions Leicester and Arsenal still await first wins in England following their goalless stalemate.
