Ortí opts out at Valencia

Jaime Ortí, the most successful chairman in Valencia CF's history, has stood down after a three-year spell in charge of the Spanish champions.

Successful tenure
Ortí, 57, replaced Pedro Cortés in July 2001 and went on to become the most successful chairman in the Mestalla club's history. During his reign, Valencia won two Spanish titles, the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup, as well as reaching a second UEFA Champions League final.

Mind made up
Ortí handed in his resignation yesterday but was asked to think over his decision for 24 hours. At a meeting today, however, he informed board members that his mind was made up. It is believed that Ortí felt his influence had gradually waned and Juan Bautista Soler, the largest shareholder at the club, is now expected to take his place.
