SUNDAY

Arsenal 2-0 Crystal Palace (Giroud 17, Iwobi 56)
Olivier Giroud's brilliant improvised finish was his second in as many starts, following his strike in the Boxing Day success against West Brom. Petr Čech made some fine saves, and Alex Iwobi made it 2-0 with what was the 20-year-old's first headed goal for the first team. The Gunners are up to third in the Premier League table, moving above fellow group stage contenders Manchester City.

SATURDAY

Leicester City 1-0 West Ham United (Slimani 20)
The English champions picked up only their second win in ten Premier League matches thanks to Islam Slimani's first-half strike. The Algerian's first goal since 26 November proved enough for Claudio Ranieri's team to claim an important three points that lifted them away from the relegation zone. Leicester have now won five league games this season – all at home.

Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City(Wijnaldum 8)
Josep Guardiola's City lost more ground in the Premier League title race after Georginio Wijnaldum's early goal at Anfield. City had won their three previous matches but lost the two before that; three of their four league losses in 2016/17 have come away from home.

Porto 1-1 Feirense (Marcano 49; Flávio 73)
The Dragons are in danger of missing out on the Portuguese League Cup semi-finals after being held for a second time in Group B. Iván Marcano put the hosts in front just after half-time but they could not defend their advantage and trail Moreirense by two points ahead of their final group game away to the leaders on 3 January – with only the top side in each section progressing to the last four.

Benfica 1-0 Paços de Ferreira (Cervi 39)
Winners of the Portuguese League Cup last season, Benfica got their trophy defence under way with a narrow victory, Franco Cervi making the difference with his first goal for the club in nine outings. The Eagles will look to continue their strong start in Group D at home to Vizela on 3 January.
