Cristiano Ronaldo equals Liga penalty record

Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty conversion against Sevilla means that he has matched Hugo Sánchez's long-held record to become the joint most prolific spot-kick scorer in Liga history.

Cristiano Ronaldo has chalked up another record, his penalty conversion against Sevilla today meaning the Real Madrid man is now level with Hugo Sánchez as the most prolific spot-kick scorer in Spanish Liga history.

The Portuguese international has converted 56 of the 65 penalties he has taken in the league since joining Madrid in 2009, with 71to his name in all competitions for the club. UEFA.com meets the Liga's top ten from 11 metres.

The Mexican striker holds the rare honour of scoring each of his 38 goals in the 1989/90 season with just one touch. It should be no surprise, then, that he had plenty of confidence from the spot.

3) Ronald Koeman (46)
The current Everton manager is the top-scoring defender in Barcelona's history with 90 goals and his impressive tally from the spot, also the best for any defender in the league, is a big reason why.

4) Luboslav Penev (43)
The second most celebrated Bulgarian to have played in Spain after Hristo Stoichkov, the former Atlético, Valencia, Compostela and Celta Vigo man was far more successful from 11 metres than his compatriot.

5) Lionel Messi (42)
Despite being Barcelona's all-time leading scorer, Messi is not yet his side's top spot-kick scorer in the league, although it cannot be long before he catches up with Koeman.

Capped 25 times by Spain, Ruiz spent his entire top-flight career with Athletic Club, from 1972–86, winning two Liga titles, and he remains the Basque club's leading marksman from the spot.

6= Rafael Marañon (34)
Signed for Real Madrid as a teenger, the striker shone brightest at Espanyol from 1974–83, and is still the club's top scorer in all competitions. He managed 116 Liga goals, 34 of them penalties.

8) David Villa (32)
Spain's 59-goal all-time top scorer hit penalties for Sporting Gijón, Real Zaragoza, Valencia and Atlético Madrid but curiously did not get a Liga penalty in three seasons with Barcelona.

9) Ander Garitano (31)
The midfielder divided his career between Athletic (1988–96) and Zaragoza (1996–2002) and is the only player in the list to have never played international football. Over half of his 50 Liga goals came from the spot.

10) Quini (30)
Also eighth in the Liga's all-time top-scorer rankings, Quini did a sideline in penalties from 1968–87, 15 of those years spent at Sporting Gijón either side of a four-season stint with Barcelona (1980–84).
