Madrid ended the weekend back at the Liga summit, but they needed to dig deep to put their midweek loss to Valencia in the rear-view mirror. Another defeat appeared to beckon after Villarreal built a 2-0 lead as the hour-mark approach, yet Gareth Bale began the fightback and Cristiano Ronaldo levelled from the spot with his 16th Liga strike this term – before Álvaro Morata headed in from close range to cap a memorable victory.

Wednesday 8 March
BARCELONA (0-4) PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
Atlético 1-2 Barcelona (Godín 70; Rafinha 64, Messi 87)
Lionel Messi posted a late winner for the second game in succession as Luis Enrique's side took short-term possession of top spot in Spain before Real Madrid prevailed at Villarreal. Surprise starter Rafinha broke the deadlock after the visitors had made a slow start, but it was Messi who grabbed the headlines as he hit the 20-goal mark for the ninth successive Liga season.

Freiburg 0-3 Dortmund (Papastathopoulos 13, Aubameyang 55 70)
Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang ended a run of four games without a goal as Dortmund eased to victory. The Gabon international looked set for another frustrating afternoon as he missed two good chances before a couple of second-half strikes provided a timely lift. Sokratis Papastathopoulos halted a drought of his own with a first Bundesliga effort since 2015.

Benfica 3-1 Chaves (Mitroglou 17 88, Rafa Silva 50; Bressan 44)
The Eagles posted a fifth consecutive win on Friday to move four points clear of Porto at the Portuguese summit before their closest rivals responded in kind. Kostas Mitroglou grabbed the opener and later added his 13th goal in 11 games. Rafa Silva had restored Benfica's lead with just his second Liga effort this term.

Tuesday 14 March
JUVENTUS (2-0) PORTO
Juventus 2-0 Empoli (Skorupski og 52, Alex Sandro 65)
The Italian champions capitalised on Napoli's slip to protect their seven-point advantage over second-placed Roma. Alex Sandro scored a rare goal after goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski had put through his own net as Juve claimed a ninth successive win – remarkably, this was the sixth 2-0 of that run.

Boavista 0-1 Porto (Soares 7)
Porto hauled themselves back within a point of Benfica at the top of the Portuguese Liga after Francisco Soares continued his excellent start to life at the club. The Brazilian forward helped himself to the only goal of the game to move on to five strikes in his first five outings with the Dragons.

Leicester 3-1 Liverpool (Vardy 28 60, Drinkwater 39; Coutinho 68)
Leicester pulled two points clear of the relegation zone with an impressive win in their first outing since Claudio Ranieri's departure last week. The Foxes had not scored a Premier League goal in 637 minutes prior to Jamie Vardy's low finish in the first half, with Danny Drinkwater adding a splendid second just 11 minutes later. Vardy was again on the mark in the second half.

Wednesday 15 March
ATLÉTICO MADRID (4-2) BAYER LEVERKUSEN
Atlético 1-2 Barcelona (Godín 70; Rafinha 64, Messi 87)
Diego Simeone's men paid the price for failing to build on their strong start as they lost for the first time since Barcelona clinched an identical result in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals on 1 February. Back from injury, Diego Godín brought the hosts level in the second half, but they had no retort to Messi's late clincher.

Leverkusen 0-2 Mainz (Bell 3, Öztunali 11)
Home hopes of stringing together three Bundesliga wins for the first time this season were swiftly dashed as struggling Mainz struck twice in the opening 11 minutes. Mainz had lost their previous six away games in the league.
