PSV Eindhoven's hopes of progressing to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages are over, but they can still finish third in Group B as they welcome to Eindhoven already-qualified Barcelona, who are looking to win their section for a record 20th time.

• The Dutch side were beaten 4-0 at the Camp Nou on matchday one – Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick and Ousmane Dembélé getting the other – and have picked up a single point from their four fixtures.

• The defeat of PSV was the first of three wins Barcelona managed, before their place in the round of 16 was assured by a 1-1 draw at Internazionale last time out.

• The Spanish side will clinch first place in the group with a win, or a draw if Inter do not beat Spurs in the other fixture. PSV can finish third but must reduce their gap to Spurs below three points on matchday five.

Highlights: Barcelona 4-0 PSV

Previous meetings
• Matchday one was Barcelona's third win in the teams' seven fixtures, with only one defeat.

• The sides traded 2-2 draws in Eindhoven and Barcelona in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• There were also plenty of goals in the teams' 1995/96 UEFA Cup quarter-final, Barcelona eventually going through 5-4 on aggregate (2-2 home, 3-2 away).

• PSV won the first tie between the sides, in the 1977/78 UEFA Cup semi-finals, 4-3 on aggregate. The Dutch club won the home first leg 3-0 – the teams' first meeting – and survived a 3-1 loss in Spain to progress; they went on to win the trophy.

Form guide
PSV
• PSV have lost all but one of their Group B games, drawing 2-2 at home with Tottenham on matchday three. Aside from the 4-0 loss in Barcelona, they went down 2-1 at home to Inter and, last time out, at Spurs.

• The Eindhoven club claimed their 24th Dutch league title in 2017/18 – the third time in four seasons they have lifted the Eredivisie crown.

• This is PSV's 16th season in the group stage – more than any other Dutch side. They qualified by beating Belarusian champions BATE Borisov 6-2 on aggregate in the play-offs (3-2 away, 3-0 home).

• The first-leg win at BATE ended a ten-game run without a European away win for PSV (D4 L6).

•  European Cup winners in 1988, PSV have reached the UEFA Champions League knockout stage only four times – most recently in 2015/16, when they got to the last 16.

• The Eindhoven club failed to win a game in their last group appearance, in 2016/17 (D2 L4), and have not won in their last 12 UEFA Champions League fixtures, group stage to final (D5 L7).

• PSV's last home win in the competition proper was a 2-1 defeat of CSKA Moskva in December 2015. They won all three home games in that 2015/16 group stage; their record since then is D3 L3 with just four goals scored.

• PSV's 2017/18 European campaign lasted only one tie – they lost 1-0 home and away to Croatian club Osijek in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

• PSV are without a win in their last four home games against Spanish clubs (D2 L2), since a 3-2 defeat of Deportivo La Coruña in December 2003 – also their last success against Liga opposition overall. Their record since, home and away, is D3 L6.

• The Dutch champions have won only four of their 14 home games with Spanish clubs. They won three of the first four such matches, but the Deportivo success is their only victory in the last ten (D6 L3).

Barcelona's five European Cup wins

Barcelona
• Ernesto Valverde's side won 4-2 at Tottenham on matchday two having opened Group B with that 4-0 home victory against PSV. Inter were then beaten 2-0 at the Camp Nou on matchday three, before a 1-1 draw at San Siro that secured progress. Barcelona are the only team in all eight groups to have sealed their place in the round of 16 with two games to spare.

• Spanish champions for the 25th time – and third in four years – in 2017/18, Barcelona have been European champions on five occasions, most recently in 2015.

• Barcelona have finished first in their UEFA Champions League group on a record 19 occasions – four times more than Real Madrid and Manchester United.

• Barça have won their group in each of the past 11 seasons, and have reached at least the quarter-finals in all of those UEFA Champions League campaigns, both competition records. In 2017/18, they succumbed to a remarkable Roma fightback in the last eight, going out despite a 4-1 home first-leg victory after losing 3-0 in the Rome return.

• That defeat at Roma ended Barcelona's ten-match unbeaten run in the UEFA Champions League (W6 D4).

• Barcelona won only one of their three away games in last season's group stage, drawing the other two, although they kept three clean sheets. They have won six of their last 18 away matches in the competition, drawing six and losing the other six. They have lost four of their last 11 away games in the UEFA Champions League (W3 D4).

• Before this season, the Spanish side's last fixtures against Eredivisie opposition came in 2014/15, when they defeated Ajax twice in the group stage (3-1 home, 2-0 away). Matchday one made it three wins in a row against Dutch clubs.
