Operation in Germany
Elber sustained a serious ankle fracture on 25 August and was operated on by a French surgeon, Dr Bernard Moyen, who prescribed the player's recovery programme. However, the former FC Bayern München forward subsequently returned to Germany at the start of November and had a second operation without Lyon's permission.
Parting of the ways
The 32-year-old was expected to be playing again in January but will now not be fit until February and a statement from Lyon last night underlined the club's unhappiness with Elber. "Lyon do not intend to endorse the professional consequences of Giovane Elber's personal choices," it said, hinting that a parting of the ways was now likely.
For Lyon, there is the consolation of being able to call on Nilmar, the exciting young Brazilian who arrived at the Stade Gerland as a last-minute replacement for Elber following his compatriot's injury.
