Proud of record
"It's very hard for me," said Berlusconi, who is stepping down after more than 18 years in charge at the San Siro. "However, Milan have won more trophies than any other club in the world in these 18 years. I can only be proud of the job I have done here."
Berlusconi bought Milan in 1986 when the club was facing a period of severe crisis and immediately built one of the most successful sides in Italy's history with Arrigo Sacchi, the then relatively unknown coach. Since then Milan have won 22 trophies: seven Italian league titles, four European Champion Clubs' Cups, two European/South American Cups, one Coppa Italia, four UEFA Super Cups, and four Italian Super Cups.
Milan have not yet announced the name of Berlusconi's successor. "I'm sure it was a very difficult decision," said Milan captain Paolo Maldini, who has spent all of his career playing under Berlusconi. "However, I'm sure he will not abandon us even if he will no longer be president.
He will always support us because he loves this club."
