Alonso out for the season

Liverpool FC are resigned to being without Spanish midfield player Xabi Alonso for the rest of the season.
Liverpool FC are resigned to being without midfield player Xabi Alonso for the rest of the season, according to manager Rafael Benítez.

Broken ankle
Alonso suffered a broken ankle in the Reds' 1-0 home defeat by Chelsea FC on 1 January and it was hoped initially he would be back within three months. However, Benítez now fears the Spanish international, a €16m summer recruit from Real Sociedad de Fútbol, will not return to action until next season.

'Will not play again'
"In my mind now I think that Xabi will not play again this season," he said. "After three months, you don't know, some players can come straight back but some players take a lot of time. If Xabi comes back it will be a bonus."
