Two more players for Legia

Polish champions Legia Warszawa have signed Krzysztof Szewczyk and Lukasz Zaluska.

Polish champions Legia Warszawa have signed Krzysztof Szewczyk and Lukasz Zaluska.

Szewczyk on loan
Szewczyk, a 26-year-old defensive midfielder, has been loaned from relegated Slask Wroclaw for a year. "I cannot guarantee him a first team place, but he did not come here sit on the bench," said Legia coach Dragomir Okuka said. "I have seen him a few times before and he is definitely a good player. Anyway, we still need right-sided midfield player."

Eyes on Sibik
Legia still have their eyes on 2002 FIFA World Cup midfield player Pawel Sibik from Odra Wodzislaw to fill that position. Sibik, who came on as a substitute during Poland's 3-1 victory against the United States is Okuka's main transfer target for the remainder of the summer.

New goalkeeper
Meanwhile, Legia have added to their defensive line by signing goalkeeper Zaluska from Stomil Olsztyn. The 20-year-old player is regarded by assistant coach Dariusz Kubicki as "a very promising goalkeeper". Zaluska played twice for Stomil, who were also relegated from the Ekstraklasa in 2001/02.

’Oliver Kahn would not have stopped us’
Zalkuska was in goal when Stomil were beaten 6-1 at home by Legia, but Kubicki did not believe that was any disgrace to the goalkeeper. "On that day even Oliver Kahn would not have stopped us", Kubicki said. "We regard Zalkuska as important player for our future."

New deals
At the same time as making these two signings, Legia have also secured new deals for four of the players who won them the 2001/02 Polish title - Wojciech Szala, Jacek Zielinski, Marek Jozwiak and Jacek Magiera. Coach Okuka also put his name to a new agreement which will see the Yugoslavian coach, who won the league during his first year at Legia, earn ten per cent more this season.
