Lyon tamed by Abidal agony

Olympique Lyonnais defender Eric Abidal could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks after breaking his foot.

Olympique Lyonnais and France defender Eric Abidal could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks after breaking his foot in a pre-season game against CA Once Caldas.

Abidal optimistic
The 26-year-old fractured his left foot during the 1-1 draw in the opening match of the Peace Cup in Pusan, Korean Republic, earlier today. "We went straight to hospital where I was told I'd be out for three months but I hope it will be less," Abidal said. "I suffered injuries last season and always managed to come back."

Houllier blow
His absence will be a blow for new coach Gerard Houllier, who must now begin Lyon's title defence without his first-choice right-back. Former LOSC Lille Métropole defender Abidal was instrumental last season as the side claimed their record-equalling fourth successive Ligue 1 title and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
