Rangers role for Rodriguez

AS Monaco FC defender Julien Rodriguez has joined Scottish champions Rangers FC for a €1.4m fee.

AS Monaco FC defender Julien Rodriguez has joined Rangers FC just in time to play against Anorthosis Famagusta FC.

Midnight deadline
The 27-year-old will be be eligible to play in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie against the Cypriot side after sealing his deal at Ibrox before the midnight registration deadline, including undergoing a medical. He has moved for a €1.4m fee and signed a four-year contract.

Previous encounter
Rodriguez, who had two years remaining on his existing deal at the Stade Louis II, captained Didier Deschamps's Monaco last season, having played for them in the 2003/04 Champions League final - a competition in which he made his debut in 2000 against Rangers.

'Special' atmosphere
Remembering the return fixture at Ibrox, which he watched from the bench, he said: "I have experienced the Ibrox atmosphere and it was something special. I am delighted to be here now as a Rangers player."

Monaco team-mate
He joins his former Monaco team-mate Dado Pršo at Ibrox after Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos turned down Rangers manager Alex McLeish's offer of a long-term deal.
