The Juventus FC defender Alessandro Birindelli faces at least four months out after damaging cruciate ligaments in his right knee.
Four championships
The 30-year-old right-back sustained the injury in a friendly against the Portuguese champions SL Benfica on Saturday and will be in plaster for two weeks prior to going under the surgeon's knife. Birindelli arrived in Turin from Empoli FC in 1997 and has gone on to play 154 Serie A games for Juve, winning four championships.
Dates
Birindelli will therefore be missing when the new Italian season starts on 28 August, and when the UEFA Champions League group stage kicks off on 13/14 September.
