Delayed kick-off for Morientes

Striker Fernando Morientes will miss Liverpool FC's opening game in Group G after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty with Spain.

Better news
It was initially feared the striker could be sidelined for much longer, but Spain's team doctor says that scans have revealed only a slight muscle rupture. "It's an injury that we estimate will keep him out for between ten days and a fortnight," said Dr Genaro Borras.

Strike partners
Morientes sat out Spain's 1-1 draw with Serbia and Montenegro on Wednesday having sustained his injury in training. He will also be in the stands for Liverpool's weekend Premiership match at Tottenham Hotspur FC. Djibril Cissé and summer signing Peter Crouch will most likely lead the line in his absence.
