FC Spartak Moskva captain Yegor Titov will miss the rest of the Russian season with a knee injury.
FC Spartak Moskva captain Yegor Titov will miss the remainder of the Russian Premier-Liga season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury.
Titov, who had returned for the weekend's derby draw with FC Lokomotiv Moscow after sustaining a knee injury against FC Anzhi Vladikavkaz on 7 August, fell awkwardly and was forced to limp off.
Operation on Friday
The 26-year-old Russian international playmaker was initially ruled out of action for between one and four months, but it was confirmed on Tuesday that he will play no further part in Spartak's plans this term and is scheduled to have an operation on Friday.
Spartak pay price
Spartak immediately suffered the consequences of losing their most influential player when they lost 2-0 to FC Basel in their UEFA Champions League Group B opener in Switzerland.
Coach Oleg Romantsev was devastated when the seriousness of the blow became apparent. "Titov is our captain, Russia's best player and the mastermind of our attacks," he said.
