Basinas parts with Panathinaikos

Greece defensive midfield player Angelos Basinas has parted company with Panathinaikos FC after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Frozen out
The 29-year-old was tied to the Athens team until December but is now free to negotiate with other sides, although if he agrees terms with another Alpha Ethniki outfit he will be unable to play until January. Basinas's departure ends three months of talks between player and club after it became apparent he was not in coach Alberto Malesani's plans for the season.

Greek international
A member of his country's victorious UEFA EURO 2004™ squad, Basinas spent ten years at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium following his debut in 1995. He subsequently registered 27 goals in 199 league appearances, winning two championships and one Greek Cup, and Panathinaikos were keen to acknowledge his efforts. "We would like to thank Angelos Basinas for his contribution to the club over all these years," a club spokesman said.
