Team ambition fires Forlán forward
Monday, April 24, 2006
Article summary
Diego Forlán is behind Andriy Shevchenko in the top scorers' list but, like his Ukrainian rival, is prepared to put the team ahead of personal goals.
Article body
After unlikely match-winners Ludovic Giuly and Kolo Touré stole the headlines in last week’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first legs, there has been no change in the top scorer standings.
Clock ticking
As such, time is running out for Andriy Shevchenko to break Ruud van Nistelrooij’s record of 12 goals in a single UEFA Champions League season, a feat the Dutchman achieved in the 2002/03 campaign. The Ukraine striker, who has found the net nine times to date, will hope to move closer to that mark when Milan visit FC Barcelona on Wednesday, having lost 1-0 at San Siro last time out.
Goals scarce
Villarreal welcome Arsenal tonight knowing they must overturn a similar deficit. They have no one in contention in the top scorer standings, with the team as a whole having scored just eight times since the start of the group stage. Attacking players Diego Forlán and Juan Román Riquelme are both on two goals, along with defender Rodolfo Arruabarrena.
Six goals and counting
Shevchenko can also target the overall record for goals scored in UEFA club competition, having equalled the long-standing tally of 56 reached by SL Benfica legend Eusébio. The Ukrainian international stands just six short of the high-water mark set by FC Bayern München's prolific forward Gerd Müller. Ronaldinho is seventh in the standings, one clear of Juventus's David Trezeguet. Samuel Eto'o has five goals alongside Arsenal's Thierry Henry and Kaká of Milan.
