Liverpool FC have signed winger Jermaine Pennant for a reported €9m while securing young English talents Scott Carson and Paul Anderson on long-term deals.

Early fame
The 23-year-old Pennant had spent one full season at Birmingham City FC, playing 38 times for the relegated club, having joined last summer on loan from Arsenal FC - the club who had recruited the Nottingham-born youngster from Notts County FC as a 15-year-old. Having successfully passed a medical and penned a four-year contract, Pennant will link up with his new team-mates at their training camp in Switzerland in preparation for the 2005 winners entering the UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round next month.

Rising stars
Meanwhile, Carson has been rewarded for his excellent progress at Anfield with a new five-year contract. The 20-year-old travelled to the FIFA World Cup finals as England’s No3 goalkeeper yet remains José Reina's deputy at Anfield. Winger Anderson, 18, has earned a new four-year deal after impressing since his January arrival from Hull City FC.
