Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Bulgarian international striker Dimitar Berbatov was named as his country's footballer of the year on Friday.
Valuable experience
The 21-year-old forward gained valuable experience with eleven appearances during the club's run in last season's UEFA Champions League, scoring two goals en route to a final defeat by Real Madrid CF. This term he has played six times in the European Champion Clubs' Cup and scored twice.
Inspirational performance
Berbatov began his career in his homeland with PFC CSKA Sofia in 1998/99 before joining Leverkusen during the 2000/01 campaign. He also inspired Bulgaria to a 2-0 win over Croatia in their UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier in October, setting up the first goal and scoring the second.
