Caneira sits out Sporting decider

Marco Caneira will miss Sporting Clube de Portugal's bid to move into the UEFA Cup at the expense of FC Spartak Moskva on Matchday 6 with an ankle injury.

Sporting Clube de Portugal defender Marco Caneira will be out of action for at least three weeks after damaging his right ankle in Wednesday's 1-0 UEFA Champions League defeat at FC Internazionale Milano.

Early concern
The Portuguese international had to be substituted in the opening minutes of the Group B encounter and it was initially feared that he had suffered a break. However, further tests showed that he had only twisted the ankle. None the less, Caneira will miss the crucial home game against FC Spartak Moskva on 5 December when Sporting will be looking for at least a draw in order to secure a place in the UEFA Cup. The versatile 27-year-old will also miss the showdown with SL Benfica in the Portuguese Liga on 1 December.
