Medical pending
The 18-year-old forward, who has already made his senior debut for the United States, will sign for the Lisbon club as soon as he completes medical tests. Adu signed his first professional contract at the age of 14 and went on to score eleven goals in 87 games for DC United between 2004 and 2006. Traded with Real Salt Lake early this year, the Ghana-born player has now decided to try his luck in Europe. Adu shone at the recent 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 win against Poland and helping the US to reach the last eight. Fernando Santos's Benfica will enter the UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round after finishing third in the Liga.
