Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard is doubtful for the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round return match against Toulouse FC because of a broken toe.
Gerrard missed England's friendly against Germany yesterday because of a broken toe, having required a painkilling injection to play in his club's 1-1 Premier League draw with Chelsea FC three days earlier. He sustained the injury during the 1-0 first-leg win in Toulouse on 15 August and manager Rafael Benítez told the club's website today that he was likely to sit out this weekend's trip to Sunderland AFC. "Normally Gerrard would be a doubt because he has a break," said Benítez.
The Merseyside team have also sent their Bulgaria Under-21 goalkeeper Nikolai Mihailov on loan to Dutch side FC Twente for the season. The 19-year-old recently joined Liverpool on a five-year contract from PFC Levski Sofia as Benítez scours Europe for some of the continent's best young talent. Meanwhile, two other teenage recruits, Hungarian goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi and Spanish defender Mikel San José, had their transfers to Anfield confirmed today, the former arriving on a year's loan from MTK Budapest, the latter on a three-year deal from Athletic Club Bilbao.
