Following the tragic news of the death of Sevilla FC player Antonio Puerta this afternoon, UEFA has confirmed the postponement of tonight's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second-leg match between AEK Athens FC and Sevilla FC. The tie has been rescheduled for next Monday, 3 September, kick-off 21.45 local time in Athens.
Sympathy and condolences
"UEFA and the entire football family extend their sympathy and sincere condolences to the family of Antonio Puerta, Sevilla FC and the Spanish Football Federation," said European football's governing body in a statement. "Today's event comes in a week that has plunged Greece into mourning for the tragic loss of many human lives in forest fires.
Flexibility and understanding
"In addition, UEFA would like to extend its thanks to the Spanish and Hellenic Football Federations, the two clubs and the two leagues for their flexibility and understanding in allowing the rescheduling of the match."
