Manchester United FC stalwart Ryan Giggs has extended his contract by a further year until June 2009, giving him a chance of breaking the club's appearance record.

Nine league titles
The 33-year-old former Wales captain joined United aged 14 and since making his senior debut in March 1991 against Everton FC has gone on to make 727 appearances – 32 short of Sir Bobby Charlton's record – and scored 141 goals. He has won 18 major honours, including the UEFA Champions League, an English record nine league titles and four FA Cups. He retired from international football in June having been capped 64 times over a 16-year period.

Manager's tribute
Sir Alex Ferguson, manager for the whole of Giggs's time at Old Trafford, said of the winger: "I am absolutely delighted that Ryan has signed for a further season. Ryan Giggs epitomises the word 'loyalty', he signed here as a 14-year-old schoolboy and is still with the club 20 years on. Apart from his playing ability, he has a fantastic demeanour and is a great role model to the younger players. I am sure he will be at the club for a long time to come."

Delight
Giggs said: "I am delighted to have signed for a further season. I am enjoying football more than ever and I hope to carry on playing for Manchester United for as long as I can. I would like to thank Sir Alex, the fans and everyone at the club for the great support I have received over the years." He has taken part in both of United's UEFA Champions League games this season, with the next to follow at FC Dynamo Kyiv on 23 October.
