Slekys killed in car accident

FBK Kaunas striker Audrius Slekys was killed in a road accident yesterday at the age of 28.

Alone in car
The 28-year-old was driving to his summer house in the countryside near Kaunas on Sunday morning to meet his wife and other relatives when his car left the road and collided with a concrete structure. Slekys, who was alone in the vehicle, died at the scene.

Five league titles
Slekys had been with Kaunas since 1999 and won three league championships with the club. He also won two titles with FK Inkaras-Grifas in 1995 and 1996. Slekys also played in Russia for FC Alania Vladikavkaz and FC Sokol Saratov.

Top scorer
Slekys had scored five goals this season to follow from the 19 he achieved last campaign when he finished as Lithuania's top scorer. However, he had been out of action since June after breaking his toe in a league match and missed both legs of Kaunas's 5-1 aggregate victory against HB Tórshavn in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round.

Celtic challenge
Kaunas are due to play the first leg of their second qualifying round tie against Celtic FC on Wednesday.
