The midfielder sustained the injury in the first half at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion and was subsequently replaced at the break by Elson, who went on to score twice against the newly-promoted club. Lanig, 25, will undergo surgery in the coming days and is almost certain to be sidelined for the first half of the season. The news comes a week after defender Christian Träsch broke a wrist during the 2-0 defeat by VfL Wolfsburg last Friday. Stuttgart play Romania's FC Timişoara in the away leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie on Tuesday.
