Juventus collect second trophy

Juventus FC won a second pre-season trophy as Europe's top sides continued to prepare for the new campaign.

Juventus FC continued to prepare for the new Serie A season in winning style as Marcello Lippi's side enjoyed success against Internazionale FC and UC Sampdoria in the Birra Moretti tournament.

Second trophy
Five days after lifting the Italian Super Cup against UEFA Champions League winners AC Milan, the Italian champions claimed another trophy in Bari in front of 60,000 spectators.

Perfect start
The tournament, comprising three matches lasting 45 minutes each, began with a game between Juventus and Inter, and the champions took the lead in the eighth minute as Italian international Mauro Camoranesi headed a free-kick from Alessandro Del Piero into the net.

Di Vaio decisive
It was 2-0 eight minutes later as Marco Di Vaio burst clear of the Inter offside trap and beat goalkeeper Francesco Toldo. Although Hernán Crespo pulled a goal back for Inter after 36 minutes, Juventus held on for the victory.

Bazzani on target
In the second match of the evening Inter drew 1-1 against Sampdoria, who equalised through striker Fabio Bazzani after 18 minutes following an early goal by Inter's young Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins.

Early setback
Sampdoria took an unexpected early lead in the final match of the evening as Francesco Pedone headed into the net in the first minute, but Juventus were level three minutes later as Di Vaio converted Fabrizio Miccoli's pass with an angled finish from the right-hand edge of the penalty area. The draw proved enough for Juventus to take the trophy.

Madrid win again
Meanwhile, Real Madrid CF secured another victory on their pre-season tour of Asia, with Ronaldo scoring twice in a 4-2 win against a Hong Kong Select XI on Friday. Luis Figo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the eighth minute after Roberto Carlos had been fouled, and Ronaldo doubled the lead five minutes later, converting a pass from Zinedine Zidane.

Quick strikes
Chinese international Wang Peng pulled a goal back with a powerful header, but two goals in two minutes from Ronaldo and Raúl González put Madrid in complete control, and Li Yao completed the scoring in first half stoppage time with another consolation for the home side.

United defeated
Manchester United FC's preparations for the new season, meanwhile, suffered a blow as the Premiership champions were defeated 3-1 by Sporting Clube de Portugal in Lisbon on Wednesday. In a match to commemorate the opening of the José Alvalade XXI stadium, one of the ten venue for UEFA EURO 2004™, two goals from João Pinto and one from Luís Felipe put the Portuguese side in complete command, with United's only reply a Hugo own goal two minutes from time.

Barcelona boost
FC Barcelona recovered from the early loss of Dutch midfield player Philip Cocu to a red card for a 20th-minute professional foul on Craig Hignett to secure a 1-0 victory against Premiership newcomers Leicester City FC. The only goal of the game arrived shortly before half-time as Ronaldinho's pass found Javier Saviola, who beat defender Steve Howey before shooting low past Ian Walker.
