FC Spartak Moskva kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League knockout stage with a narrow victory against SL Benfica.

With Spartak hampered by injuries, coach Unai Emery was forced to send out a makeshift side for their third match in Group G. They got off to the perfect start nonetheless thanks to Rafael Carioca's third-minute strike, and while Lima equalised midway through the half, an own goal just before the break by Jardel gave the Russian team an all-important win which lifts them off the foot of the section.

Match in 5

  • Spartak gain first points of campaign
  • Rafael Carioca and Jardel own goal earn the win
  • Lima had headed visitors level
  • Benfica now bottom of Group G
  • The Eagles target revenge on 7 November

Reaction

We were really good on the ball. Not only did we score twice, we were really intense in attack and defence. We didn't allow Benfica to do that much.

We pushed hard for an equaliser but couldn't find it and we have to win our two remaining home games – I'm sure with our support we will go through.
