Heynckes looks to the challenges ahead

Jupp Heynckes was happy to see Mario Gomez back on the scoresheet and is looking forward to the last 16 after FC Bayern München beat FC BATE Borisov 4-1 to win Group F.

Jupp Heynckes, Bayern coach
Of course I'm happy. Our primary goal was to win the game and thus finish at the top of the group. We did that in an impressive manner. I think that we can be satisfied with the performance. The players out there today have never played together in a professional match. Nonetheless, my impressions from the training sessions and the condition of the players determines the lineup. I trust all my players to deliver in every single game.

Mario Gomez was out of action for a long time and is obviously not at 100% yet, but he is always a dangerous player and knows where to position himself to score goals. Obviously it was very important to score a second goal in that period [following Jérôme Boateng's red card]. After that, I was able to make substitutions. We have had an awful lot of games in recent weeks, and therefore it was important to give players a chance who haven't been involved as often.

Gomez timed his cross very well and it was difficult for the defender to stop Shaqiri for his header, but Xherdan also positioned himself well. Wishful thinking is not suitable in the Champions League. Even those teams that finished second are very dangerous. Arsenal, Madrid, Milan, Juventus or Shakhtar are tough opponents, but obviously it's good for us to have the away game first and then play in front of our home crowd.

Viktor Goncharenko, BATE coach
It is hard to assess the whole group stage directly after this game. We need some time and to see it in the cold light of day to analyse our performances this autumn. I don't think it's correct to make judgements on anything right after the final whistle.

Unfortunately we lost something when our opponents went down to ten men. I think it would have actually been easier for us if both teams had stayed at 11. We have enough resources in terms of players, but obviously lack regular games of this calibre.
