It was a case of so near yet so far for CFR 1907 Cluj as they became the first Romanian side to win at Old Trafford but still fell short in their quest to claim a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Paulo Sérgio's men began a chilly night needing to better Galatasaray AŞ's result at SC Braga and with Luís Alberto's spectacular 56th-minute goal and some fine goalkeeping from Mário Felgueiras, they had their target in sight. Then came Galatasaray's late clincher in Portugal, the Turkish club edging CFR out courtesy of their superior head-to-head record with the teams tied on ten points.

Match in 5

  • Galatasaray win means CFR finiah third despite victory
  • CFR first Romanian team to beat United
  • Visitors set Romanian group stage points record
  • Luís Alberto scores stunning winner
  • Hosts top Group H and await 20 December draw

Reaction

We qualified comfortably and the real tournament starts in February. The knockout stages are fantastic.

The players are sad because they did not qualify with ten points, but they should be proud – it is not common to win at Old Trafford.

Simon Hart (@UEFAcomSimonH), Old Trafford: A superb effort by CFR, who become the first Romanian team to win at Old Trafford through Luís Alberto's brilliant goal, but events in Braga mean it is not enough to send them through.
