FC Porto made their greater UEFA Champions League experience count against Málaga CF as João Moutinho scored the only goal of an intense and high-quality round of 16 match in Portugal.

Moutinho's beautifully conceived, and finished, strike just before the hour finally punctured the resolute defending of Manuel Pellegrini's Málaga, who will nevertheless feel they have a chance to turn things around in the return leg at La Rosaleda on 13 March.

Match in 5

  • Moutinho's 56th-minute strike gives Porto upper hand
  • Málaga register only one shot on goal
  • Hosts frustrated before the break
  • Porto's Sandro impresses and sets up winner
  • Rodríguez makes classy European return from injury

Reaction

Our first goal was to win, our second goal was not to concede. However, after the great quality we showed, I am not satisfied because we could not make it 2-0.

Porto knew how to pressure us. We have shown in the past that we are capable of turning things around and we'll look to prove that ability at home.

Minute By Minute

  • End Time
    The referee blows for half-time.
Plenty of nice touches but without any real end product to trouble either keeper. Porto have been on the attack for most of the half but Málaga will head in the happier team having restricted the home side to set-pieces and shots from distance.
  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
João Moutinho ensured a potentially frustrating night against a resolute Málaga was made a lot simpler with a fine second-half slotted finish. The Spanish barely registered a shot as Porto head into the second leg with the edge in the match.
