Real Madrid CF and Manchester United FC will meet at Old Trafford on 5 March with their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie all square after a scintillating contest between two of the game's most decorated sides.

Danny Welbeck gave the visitors the lead against the run of play in the 20th minute but ten minutes later Cristiano Ronaldo's superb header against his former club brought Madrid level. It was an outstanding performance from visiting goalkeeper David de Gea on his return to his native city, however, that stole an often spectacular show at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Match in 5

  • Ronaldo equalises on first appearance against former club
  • Welbeck's away goal gives United early advantage
  • Coentrão and Van Persie hit woodwork
  • De Gea outstanding in Red Devils' goal
  • Tie finely poised ahead of 5 March return at Old Trafford

Reaction

Now it is time to go to Old Trafford. One-all is not a bad result and we can score more than one goal there. The result leaves it open, it is 50-50.

We missed some chances and the keeper made a great save in the last minute. We have got a big job on our hands but it is definitely in our grasp.
