Weidenfeller's Dortmund striking the right balance

Borussia Dortmund's flair has been hailed but they have been solid in defence too and Roman Weidenfeller tells UEFA.com it all stems from an "aggressive, positive style".

Wednesday's goalless draw at Málaga CF was an unusual experience for Borussia Dortmund who have only been involved in one other stalemate this term.

Champions League, 8.45pm, it is a special moment. We can be proud of our campaign so far, but it should not be the end
Roman Weidenfeller

German champions in 2011 and 2012, Dortmund have been lauded for their vibrant attacking displays in this season's UEFA Champions League, but they have also been a tough nut to crack at the back, conceding just twice in their last four games in the competition. Goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller says the team are reaping the benefits of their collective approach. "Both our attacking and defensive game are based on pressing the opponent and getting forward right away," the 32-year-old told UEFA.com. "We play an aggressive, positive style of football."

The harmonious balance is not only down to the style Dortmund employ, but also owes something to the personnel. "We are following the same objective, we want to win together, and we are only strong together. The input from the younger generation and the experience of the older generation – that takes us forward."

All the squad are certainly enjoying their run to the quarter-finals as they look to make the last four for the first time since 1998, when they were holders. The intervening years did not bring much success, with Weidenfeller saying the players would "sit on the sofa, watching the games, looking sadly towards the TV". Now he "gets goosebumps". "We have a great atmosphere in our stadium," he added. "Champions League, 8.45pm, it is a special moment. We can be proud of our campaign so far, but it should not be the end."
