Arsenal FC set the wheels in motion on their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory at Olympique de Marseille as Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey fired the north London team to a hard-fought opening-day win.

Arsène Wenger's men visited the Stade Vélodrome chasing a club-record tenth consecutive away success in all competitions, yet they looked unlikely to attain it until Walcott unleashed a superbly taken strike on 65 minutes. The hosts had created the lion's share of the chances, but their hunt for at least a share of the spoils was ended by the in-form Ramsey with seven minutes remaining, despite Jordan Ayew's late penalty.

Reaction

There is disappointment and frustration. We deserved to share the spoils at least. It would have been fair.

We were a bit timid, but overall it was a victory of patience and experience even if we were not flamboyant.

Minute By Minute

  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
A fantastic win for Arsenal who can be very pleased with the three points. They were tested throughout by a Marseille side who were very impressive, but Theo Walcott set the Premier League outfit on their way before Aaron Ramsey sealed the victory. The French side did get the goal their performance deserved, when Jordan Ayew converted a penalty, but it was nothing more than a consolation.
  • Goal
    90+3
    J. Ayew (Marseille) scores from the penalty spot.
His older brother won the penalty and the 22-year-old completed the job from the spot. Surely it is too late, too late though.
  • Substitution
    90+1
Miyaichi (in) - Flamini (out) (Arsenal)
The pacey 20-year-old comes on to make his UEFA Champions League debut.

  • Goal
    83
    Ramsey (Arsenal) scores!
The man in form may have just won the game for his team. Most of the Welshman's work has been in a defensive sense so far, but he managed to get forward and create some space on the edge of the area here, before unleashing a right-footed shot beyond Steve Mandanda and into the back of the net.
