A brilliant Lionel Messi hat-trick, which leaves him within ten goals of overtaking Raúl González as the all-time UEFA Champions League top scorer, fuelled a powerful 4-0 win for FC Barcelona over AFC Ajax.

Gerard Piqué's second-half header added gloss but goalkeeper Víctor Valdés also earned an honourable mention for a string of good saves including from Kolbeinn Sigthórsson's 77th-minute penalty. The resulting Group H victory was the perfect introduction to the UEFA Champions League for Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino on matchday one.

Reaction

The group stage is always complicated. We are adapting to Martino's philosophy. We were better in the second half.

I was satisfied with the first half, we created as many chances as they did. We also gave away two goals at the end - that is what really annoys me.

Minute By Minute

  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
Normal service is resumed at Camp Nou. Barcelona eventually cruised to a home win over Ajax after an even first half, and are indebted to their Argentinian linchpin Lionel Messi once again who bagged a superb hat-trick. Any treble Cristiano Ronaldo can score for Real Madrid CF the night before, Lionel Messi can repeat for Barcelona tonight.

    Denswil (Ajax) is booked.
Cynical foul from Stefano Denswil results in a booking after Pedro Rodríguez deftly flicks the ball over the Ajax man's head.

  • Penalty
    77
Sigthórsson (Ajax) missed the penalty saved by the goalkeeper.
Ajax are given a chance to grab a consolation after Javier Mascherano brings down substitute Thulani Serero, but a weak penalty by Kolbeinn Sigthórsson to Víctor Valdés' right is easily pounced upon by the Spanish goalkeeper.
